August & September 2020
This month: Groovy Scales
Welcome to my flute-playing free Hints and Tips Page; a new page is posted here on the first day of each month... with all the extra workshops for FATB Online at present, make that every two months!
I hope you are staying safe and well wherever you are. There are currently no live flute events planned with Flutes at the Barns for the rest of 2020, when we would usually be looking forward to a course or two and some specialist Flute Days in September and November... thank goodness there is plenty going on with FATB Online instead! (You can find the FATB Online calendar here.) Since lockdown, there have been well over 150 workshops, and I have loved giving participants the chance to perform in the supportive masterclasses, the no-pressure-chance-to-make-music-live-in-duet-with-me (in the play-along sessions, music of all types) and it's been a real privilege to lead one-off classes for skills development too! The start of August alone has given me the chance to talk to folks about colour, double-tonguing, building a repertoire of baroque music, as well as in-depth studies of the Faure Fantaisie and CPE Bach's Hamburger Sonata - and it's lovely to stay connected with you all online too! One little tip though; places do go quickly, so get yourself onto the mailing list for a first look at what's coming out.

We know about major scales, we're usually pretty happy playing those. We know the theory behind the different types of minor scales... and many of us are fairly happy with those too (albeit they're a bit more complicated). This month, let's mix things up a bit with some fun scales - as met in the jazz-world - such as the pentatonics and blues scales (my favourites!)!

In October I'll update this page with top tips on triple tonguing - see you then!
Happy flute-ing,
Zoë
