Course Description and Tutors

This Flutes at the Barns course is open to adult players of all abilities, whether new to the courses or returning FATBers. International participants welcome, as ever (guidance can be offered as to local accommodation in St Albans, or alternatively in central London, just 20 minutes away by train).

Course tutor Zoë Booth will be joined by regular FATB course accompanist Mark Smith to welcome you to the Flutes at the Barns Flute Day October 2023. This Flute Day (strictly limited to no more than ten participants) is aimed at adult flute players looking to focus on any matters related to flute-playing! The day will feature four busy sessions covering a varied programme including group workshops on repertoire, technique, interpretation and/or ensemble playing, and the chance to perform in a masterclass, to build up performing experience and receive personalised tips. Zoë and Mark will also perform a short, exclusive tutor concert. The focus on personal development will run throughout each of the sessions, providing the chance to enjoy exercises to develop tone, fingers, articulation, rhythm, breathing and so much more. There are also limited slots available for those attending this Flute Day who wish to book for an individual lesson the previous afternoon (Friday 27th October).

Flutes at the Barns has always encouraged a friendly and supportive atmosphere in which participants of any ability level can improve and make music together without pressure. Those who do choose to take advantage of the performing opportunity will be given every encouragement from their tutors and fellow course-goers; those participants are recommended to prepare solo material as the basis for their masterclass. All other music for the day will be provided, so please expect sight-reading at your level. Please do bring any piccolos or low flutes you have indicated on your application form, plus your C flute; you may get the chance to play them in the ensemble sessions. Breaks and lunch are often sociable events, with much like-minded musical talk.

Venue

Trestle Arts Base is a former church, now renovated to provide an artistic atmosphere for dancers, artists, musicians and the resident theatre company. Set in a quiet park within a housing estate, Trestle has a creative and spacious feel, exclusively for our use on the Flute Day. Musical activities will be held in the Apex Studio (step-free access by stairs or lift), a spacious, studio with a wonderful acoustic, lots of light and the attractive backdrop of the former church from which Trestle was so sensitively converted. Trestle is a few minutes by taxi from St Albans City Station, and approximately ten minutes from St Albans town centre, a popular tourist destination for visitors to the Cathedral and Abbey of St Albans, the historic clock tower, the famous chartered market and Verulamium Park, with its’ lake, Roman remains and museum.

Lunch and Refreshments

Whilst on Flutes at the Barns allow yourself to be taken care of, with lunch provided. To sustain your energy levels throughout the music-filled day, refreshments will be provided on-site; hot and cold drinks and snacks will be available throughout the day, and your choice of lunch can be enjoyed alongside fellow course-goers in the middle of the day.
